I want to introduce you to the four main principles of osteopathy. These are huge guidelines for how I approach healthcare:
.
1) Structure and function are interrelated. .
The alignment of the bones and tension in the fascia (connective tissue) can affect the flow of the fluids, including blood that brings nourishment, veins that remove toxins, lymph that drains inflammation, and CSF for proper nerve communication. .
2) The body tends towards balance, or homeostasis. It has a self-regulatory mechanism. Or, as Hippocrates called it, your own “inner physician.”
.
3) The body responds as a whole – as one unit, not separate parts.
.
Even though we have divided the body into “systems” such as the cardiovascular system or nervous system or immune system, the reality is all of these systems must work together. Plus within each system are elements of the other systems. Eg, the heart has nerves and lymph. .
Also, if you think about the body as a balloon and you twist that balloon, that twist will be felt throughout. .
The part affects the whole - that’s plain physics.
.
4) Rational treatment is based on the above three principles.
.
That means, help the body in its alignment and remove tension that can block the flow of the fluids.
.
Support the body’s natural self-healing mechanism. I have this quote by Hippocrates written in my emails -
“Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well.”
.
Treat the body and person as a whole. Even if specialists are involved, make sure to collaborate to keep the big picture in mind.
.
I travel all over to learn ways to implement these principles.
.
I’m sharing them here so that you can tap into them too.
.
So that they can help give new perspectives if other physicians and healthcare practitioners feel stuck.
.
These are nature’s principles. Nature loves a balance. The more we work with nature, the more healing is possible.
.
Let’s continue to raise the bar of medicine.
.
With love,
Dr. Dijamco
